Shari Fisher Haydon
I am going on the trek because I feel a great love, appreciation and admiration for the pioneers who have left such a wonderful legacy for those of us coming after. I also feel it could be a great experience for strengthening and learning about myself and my family in ways I don’t yet know. And what an adventure to take while I can!
I am walking for Anna Barbara Schaufelberger Fisher, Barbara Wehrli Fisher, Elizabeth Sigrist Fisher, Martha McKay Fisher. As my maiden name is FISHER I feel a connection even though we may not be related. I also feel I’m representing the women in general as I am the only female walking.
Interests: reading, music, movies (mainly chick flicks), cute things (like my kids), adventures, and hugs and kisses.

This is the picture you get when someone says”Hey Shari!”.I do smile a lot but not so much when I am pulling and pushing the handcart – that is hard work.It weighs about 190 pounds and then you add some stuff…I thought my arms were going to fall off yesterday. My appreciation and awe at the pioneers continues ti grow.Could I have been one of those single mothers who pulled a cart the whole way themselves. Not how i felt yesterday !! It also makes such a difference when someone else puts in some work too – the difference is amazing! Working together is so important.Well a windy night and thunder storms predicted so hopefully we’ll all be in camp warm and snug before then. I wanted to mention Martins Cove – our first night camping! When Clive had first mentioned doing the trek I said I wouldn’t even consider it if it was cold and snow. What do we get our first night – SNOW!! I was so cold! I couldn’t sleep and Michael didn’t move all night and his face was cold – I kept thinking of those pioneers who woke up next to those who had died in the night!! This is really a day by day adventure. You get discouraged if you think too far a head but each day is do able! I am greatfull to the physical abilities of Clive,Brett and Conner who make it possilble for us to achieve our daily walking goals. Brett’s the energizer bunny and Clive and Conner are the stalwart – get the job done fellas! love them!love you all!!

Shari,
I am so glad that you and I had a few sweet moments of reading journal entries from our pioneer sisters. It helped me feel for your story of Michael, and your own concerns as his mother. (Tissue came in handy) I love you and pray for you every day. I know that you are being surrounded by angels, and are a HUGE positive spirit to the group. Though you are hurting, they couldn’t do it without you. Thank you. XOXOXO Michelle

Shari!
Your picture is awesome. I ran a five k with autumn
And then biked up to Bridal Veil thinking the whole time of you…we ran into a group of youth preparing for a trek…my arms ache just READING your post….ow. You are quite the ward focus and you better not do anything too naughty or it will turn into a reality tv show! We love you and are hoping those darn nights aren’t so cold….
Shari Haydon
May 24th, 2010 at 13:42
Trust me no reality show here! There’s no way I’d have a camera in my face more than needful – which is as little as possible!!As for naughty things – too tired and no time once the walking, setting up camp, cooking, cleaning etc done! The nights have been better – not freezing to death! This darn wind is a killer to push and pull against tho! Give my love to all the YW including leaders and all my thanks for everything to get us here and prayers and love! It really helps get me through as does the day we get into This is the Place and everyone’s there to meet us!!!

Thinking of you all each day and wishing you all good health and strenght to endure this trek. When I told some of the youth here they said they would not growl about their 3 to 4 days trek at the end of September. Have kept a number of family members up to date who aren’t church members and they are in awe of you all. We remember some of our time at Glasshouse Mountains doing it tough but not all the walking. Brandon is 16 today, 23rd of May. Dad says you are doing a great job and we are all proud of you. Would liked to have been there with you. Love Mum and Dad.

Love and miss you too.I keep thinking how great it would be if you and Dad were at This is the Place when we came in!! Wishful thinking but I do think of you often and it keeps me going! It is hard and more than I thought but I try to just think day by day or it gets too overwhelming! I don’t know how they did it! Tough and determined! Mum you are my example! You’ve done so many great things in tough circumstances and never complained! You’re the best! Dad – the boys don’t believe you couldn’t do this especially if you were a little bit younger – not sure what that would be!Thanks for everything!

Thinking about you every day, Shari. (and all the boys, of course, but particularly you) I know I’m not only one. How’s the blisters? Want a pair of sneakers sent over? I’m sure the pioneers would have worn them if they were available at the local trading post! What size are you? In the meanwhile, get those old ones on and kill them off while you wait for more to arrive. Let your feet ease into the walking and have some healing time. All of you are doing such a amazing job. Day at a time sounds good to me.

I think I’m about a 7!/2. We didn’t really have a choice with easing in to the walking. It was this is what we need to do today and off we went. We are having a break today so that will help. Thanks for the thoughts and love our way.We need it all!

Well it looks like another storm tonight – Nebraska is living up to its reputation. We have done over 300 miles now!It still seems unreal that we are really here doing this.We are getting use to the bugs, checking for ticks, putting up and taking down the camp, rain ,thunder and lightning and waving to everyone we see – which is a lot when we walk on highway 30! Trains honk at Mikey all the time which he loves, cars slow down to take photos so who knows where they’ll end up, the pockets in my aprons are often filled with things – “Can you hold these please Mum!” and I remember them when I kneel on them setting up the tent! OW!! I do enjoy the wildflowers I receive. Today I found a tiny turtle on the side of the road as we were walking. The boys think he is great! I have been trying to get letters finished to those who sent some with the Carters – hopefully they’ll be done for them to deliver. The trains can be heard constantly but I don’t think they keep anyone up thank goodness. My feet are doing better as is the rest of me so hopefully that means I’m getting trek hardened! We have been enjoying our treats from our ward back in Provo – THANK YOU!! Apparently we are about half way across Nebraska!! WOO HOO! Celebrating with popcorn. I need someone to show me how to upload photos. Took one last night with the boys under their tarp and lightning in the background! The Lord is letting us experience the elements that’s for sure – more to come I’m sure! We are not getting use to the smell of cows – especially around lunch time!! Anyway I think of things to say when I am walking but forget when I get on the computer.
love you all

Awww…Shari! I miss you…
So, do you get to keep the turtle? Do you think he could make it all the way to SLC? Hey, it’s better than that puppy Matt’s been begging for, no? Thank you for taking such good care of my naughty boys! I hope they make it up to you every now and then, and make it worth your efforts. I know that they absolutely adore you; BUT…they forget how we (mother’s) like them to show it at times. I’m glad to hear that your feet don’t have the sharp shooting pains anymore. That was so sad. : ( Brett says his blisters are about healed up too! Good on you two! ; )
You are a good woman & don’t forget it!
Love ya,

I think what your doing is a little like a mission. You are in the real world but not really living as you woul;d in the real world if you know what i mean. Like missionaries do not have to worry about a job, cooking food all the time, money while trying to do the missionary work and they find it hard to understand why members are not always 100% go. The they get back off their mission and get married, get a job and have a family and the real world starts. All I am trying to say is enjoy every experience possible while you are out there because when you get back into the real world all those other pressurers will return but you may be able to face them easier now. You will gain more than just physical strength on this trip I am sure.
Tyler is so cute and hummy he is a lovely baby at the moment. Love you guys

The RV problems we’ve been having all week have finally been solved – a replacement!! It’s bigger than the last one and we were able to all go to church in the same car – only the second time to a real chapel! We had an LDS couple park next to us last night and that was great talking to them and their trek experiences – they’ll meet us again in Casper, Wyoming. Another lovely family talked to us and hope to keep in contact with them and see them in Douglas, Nebraska. Nice to have a day off walking and the people at church here in North Platte were really nice but not enough Young Women for the boys! ha ha! Nice to have a shower and wash off the dirt but my face is sunburnt and browning – I may look like a leather bag when we get home! We were in the newspaper here today – front cover. Unfortunately the photo only has Justin,Sam and me as Josh was asleep in the cart and the others were waiting for the RV! The reporter had spent a year in Melbourne and and had played golf in Benalla so we had a chat about Australia! Who would have guessed! A lady gave us icy poles( otterpops) yesterday which was great and then we saw here at church! Sis.Stalker.The boys had a big swim yesterday, unfortunately Clive and I didn’t have time nor outfits appropriate! Mikey picked up a baby bunny today. So cute! It was over at another campsite and he went over and just picked it up.I thought it must have been a dead rat or something and then he comes and shows us this cute little thing. Amazing. He is loving the animals – dogs, bugs everything.Well must go cook some pancakes for the starving tribe! love you all!

That’s so cute! When you come back you can go to the Cemetery and there are BILLIONS of bunnies there. My family always walks up there and feeds them carrots. 🙂 When you guys come back you’re going to be SO tan. You’re lucky. Right now I’m just REALLY red, peeling and blistering. (I got my Fathers skin. Rats! I hate genes! Not really.) 😦 Well I hope you guys are doing good. Sorry about the troubles with the RV. That must stink. Luv you Wombat! See you in 2 months!

Wombat, there were like 50 tornadoes in the part of America that you were in. I don’t know if that usually happens, but there weren’t any in Nebraska, so I’m good. 🙂 Are you guys doing OK? I want to just talk to you guys so BAD! You have no idea (well actually, you probably do. But oh well.) My cooking camp started today! Ohboy! was THAT interesting! The little kids are all SUPER cute but we were running out of time, and I felt like was going to explode. I was glad when that was over with. I wasn’t very prepared though, so for the older kids I set out the ingredients and all that stuff, and it was SO much easier! I don’t know if it was just because they’re older, or because I had prepared, but it felt good not to be going crazy the whole time. 🙂 I remember reading a scripture one time that said something like “If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” I love that scripture. It so true it’s not even funny. I love how the scriptures are a perfect guideline for your life. If you read you’re scriptures, and say you’re prayers, and keep the commandments, and have a testimony, you’ll be good. Sis. Hayden, I miss you so much. I want you just to be back soon. But time goes by pretty fast, so you’ll be home soon. Have fun out there! I love you all and I’m praying for you every day and night! OOOOOOOOOOO ❤

Hi Shari,
I have been trying to get on to this website and kept getting a message that tells me this website is offline try again later lol. So FINALLY I have gotten on woohoo! It was great to read that your feet and muscles are getting a little more used to all the work they are expected to do. Hopefully this means less pain for you. I thought you would be happy to have a tan for one of the first times in your life lol. You used to always want one when we were younger, see all you had to do was wait and the lord would bless you with the opportunity to get a tan lol. You are fabulous and I am so proud to call you my sister. You have had so many changes and challenges in your life in the last while and you are walking through this one with great strength. We love you heaps and heaps.
Jayden says he has been saving up heaps of hugs for you!! Something to look forward to.
Kody says I wish you had already finished the trek.
Riley says that he misses you lots!!
Blake says that he sends you smiley faces and he misses you as well.
Kieara says that you are a princess and thank you for being so great.
Jason is going to send you a big kite to hook up to the back of the cart and fly on lol.
We love you all sooo much and hope all continues to go well. But knowing that the Lord is with you helps us to worry less about you all. He will always protect you. When we were reading about the faith of the stripling warriors the other day we thought of you all.
Nana is at our house atm and she is taking kieara back to Canberra with her on Wednesday night. Fun fun fun for them all. Love you love you.

I saw a dead mouse while was mowing the lawn today. I saw hawk kill another bird in my back yard and ruin my freshly mowed lawn by covering it with fluff. My garden was about to get murdered by hail stones the size of overly large peas. Other than that, I’ve had an awesome day! I made golden lemon bread with my siblings (it’s so much fun to cook with little kids. They’re so cute!) I worked on my integrity project (GO GIRLS CAMP!) . I am making a modest skirt, and it’s PuRpLe! 😀 I am always thinking of you wombat! (Luv how I’ve finally remembered to call you wombat?) We still haven’t come up with a girls camp name for sis. naylor or sis. brotherson. Do ya have any good ideas? This Wednesday we are shopping for purple stuff at DI! That was SOOOOOOOOOO fun last year! (Were you there?) I’m giving my yellow stuff from last year to my friend Taylor. (They’re color is yellow this year.) 🙂 I hope you’re having fun with all those boys out there! That reminds me (don’t ask me how) are you going on the huff-n-puff? or are you gonna be so sick of the outdoors you’ll never want to set foot outside again? Cause if you do come, that would be so awesome! I loved the huff-n-puff last year. That was SO awesome. I can’t wait to take all the first years on a snipe hunt this girls camp. (teeheehee!) You should do that while you’re out there, to like Josh and Matt. They’d love it! You know the “secret” to catching snipes, right? Any ways, I should probably get to bed now. I love you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much wombat! I’m counting down the days till you get back! I luvs you! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (lot’s of hugs!) 😀

Hope all have seen our new schedule and have changed your dates for meeting us!!!The wagon train is only a day ahead of us – we’ve been following their trail for awhile now seeing the wheel tracks and droppings – and we are getting excited to catch up with them and spend some time being with fellow pioneers!I’ve discovered that my bonnet is great for sheltering me from the sun but keeps all the heat in and my face is in a sauna!Sweating LOTS while the boys all look quite dry! Walked around the lake between Glendo and here and it is flooded and expecting to rise another 4 feet so we’ve been blessed to pass here now or we’d be swimming with the cart and I’m not sure how that would go! Lots of hills Thursday and my group still did 3 miles /hr so that was great.Felt bad my feet were sore again and was unable to continue with Brett and Sam for the last leg!Felt even worse when I found out Brett was sick!Josh and Matt been sick for a couple of days so hope they feel better soon.Missing being on girls camp with the Young Women but I know we’re both doing great things!!Go purple!Got to go pull the cart. love Shari

June 28th, 2010 at 22:59
Shari – This is Ann Packard, BYU reporter covering you now! Just wanted to ask you a couple of questions – and hope you can reply by Tuesday night!
1. What type of preparations for the trek were you involved in before you left? Being as descriptive as possible will be helpful!
2. Considering the preparations that you made – how did they prepare you physically, mentally and spiritually? And if not, what advice would you give someone now?
I will be asking all those that can write the same question, and would be very appreciative of any input all can offer.
For next weeks article, I would like to focus on the “celebrations” that your company have experienced, such as birthdays along the way, Samuel’s ordination, the half-way point, arriving in Martin’s Cove, 4th of July and any other celebrations that you feel are newsworthy!
Look forward to hearing back from you.

Hey anne Hope this isn’t too late and you might still be able to use it somehow. With the trek being on again off again I didn’t take my fitness as serious as I should have so for others coming behind do as much walking etc as possible.Good shoes are a must and even though I though mine would be ok they weren’t and I had to get someone to get me some in a bigger size to allow for the expanding with the heat etc.Make sure your skirt lenghths are about 3/4 to allow for bending over to push and going up hills.Read and learn as much about the places ans pioneers as you can.Go with people you will get along with and will do their share. That includes your support crew.Make sure everyone knows what is expected and what you want to achieve. We had weekly meetings for about 7 weeks before to go over rules, expectations, jobs etc and tried to have the kids take ownership for them. That was a great idea except that hasn’t been the reality.I got pioneer stories, personal pioneer stories from people in our ward, various songs, recipes, games, riddles etc to keep us occupied on the cart but pushing and doing that is a bit tricky and I still get breathy while trying to sing and push and pull! The physical has been trying but dealing with the issues of relationships has been the most trying for me.There is the kids, support crew and parents of the kids who came along and each have provided stress and other things for us to deal with.So some of our goals and plans have not been realised.Clive has been a great support and I feel our relationship has strengthened through this experience. He has really led the show and listened to my complaints and tried to be understanding and direct me in a Christ- like direction instead of dispair and frustration. He has also put in huge efforts physically to ensure we achieve this.He won’t say this so I will.I feel I could have prepared more spiritually to be more in tune with things and to maybe handle things differently but the lord still blessed me with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for which I am so thankfull!
As for celebrations we have had the boys birthdays, one of the pioneers birthdays, every hundred miles we celebrate,Sam’s ordination was wonderful and my joy runneth over, going to a ward/branch was something to celebrate as was people giving us things.Sam passing the sacrament was great and had a mother wondering where the last 12years went.I feet each time a group comes in especially the afternoon group as this marked another day of walking done is a celebration.Special historical places and markers were times for celebration.People visiting and walking with us.To me all things that added to our experience were cause for celebration.Hope this helps otherwise call and and I’ll try to explain. Thanks Ann you’re doing an awesome job – you get an A from us!!

I should probably add that the outdoors plays a major role in this adventure so gear for storms, major wind, hail, rain, sun etc is a must and knowing how to handle those situations would be very helpful.I’m not sure people understand that until they are out here in it.

Shari,
Ann IS doing a fabulous job. And I’m not sure that you got the word, but that brown bag grocery sack of chips, salsa, treats and graham crackers, juice mix, etc. was from Ann. As well as the manila envelope inside. Brandon informed me that he wasn’t sure who to tell you it was from at the time of arrival there. Ann…going the extra, extra mile. Thanks go out to her, again.

I’m sure it has been a very busy, tiring week….especially without running water, toilets, stove, etc. I hope all is well and that the boys are behaving well for you.
You have gone through some very sacred country this week! What was it like? I would love to have stayed there with you all! Sounds like you will be having at least one visit per week from Provo neighbors and family until you arrive “home” (SLC).
Have been doing alot of thinking about you, and wishing you the best.
Bonnet’s off to ya!
Love, Michelle

Hey Shari!
I’ve been thinking about you lots, and finally tried looking you up. My sis & bro-in-law are at Martin’s Cove right now with a youth group for a few days. They are on a trek. I was wondering what the odds were that you’d run into her. Probably not very good. I can’t wait to hear all of the adventures first hand. You guys are amazing!
