Samuel Haydon
My name is Samuel Haydon. I’m eleven years old turning twelve in June, which is in one month. We are going on this trek from Winter Quarters, Nebraska to Salt Lake City Utah. I really don’t want to go on the trek but my parents are making me go on it. Why don’t I want to go? Because I will be going to middle school and want to get a better relationship with my friends over the holidays, and have fun with them. I have chosen to walk for a person who walked in the 10th Handcart Company. His name is Jacob Fisher, I chose him because my mums maiden name is Fisher. I hope this will be a great experience and I will feel the spirit.
I love to play sports (I’m a cougar fan). The people who I look up to are Brent Harvey (Australian Rules Footballer), Jameer Nelson, Conner Corbin , Brett Corbin, Brandon Corbin, Chad Naylor, and Justin Carter. I look up to these individuals because they each show leadership, service, and courage and try to live great and faithful lives.
And that’s my life right now!

Day 8.
We have walked over 100 miles. I love the camping, but the walking is not fun. It has rained on us a couple of times, which is not very fun. I really want to be back home and play with friends.

Wow! That is a lot of miles already! It’s only going to get better as each day gets closer to summer. Lucky you have your friends with you so when you get more used to the walking you will have more energy to play after setting up camp. Hope the walking gets better for you soon.

Sam, don’t worry about school. The more you worry the less cool you become, so just enjoy your trek, and make the best of it. If you don’t you’ll look back on it, and remember how lame you felt. (I ramble when I’m tired0 Besides, you’ll make TONS of new friends when you get to Centennial. (Well at least I did!) Luv ya, and remember to smile! 🙂

Hi Sam, the man!
What’s up? I sure hope you are staying out of the lakes! (well, that is unless you are jumping in for a swim on purpose). Josh hasn’t tried that again has he? Anyway…you guys are amazin’, and we are SO proud of you and your determination to stick to it! I’m sure it’s been super dooper tough…but, I guess in the end, you’ll be super dooper tough too! : )
I love you and am praying for you,
Sis. Corbin

Hi Sam,
Hope you and the boy’s are having a great time. This is going to be a Summer to remember. Being apart of this historic trek and then receiving the Aaronic Priesthood while your out there on this trek. That is something for your journal that few will ever record in their own journals.
Take good care of your brothers and mom and dad. Regards, Bro. Neese

hey Austin,
Its me Sam. Yes RV broke but we really didn’t have to walk that much more because we have groups. The Morning Group is Josh, Conner, Justin and Mum, they walk first. The Afternoon crew Matt, Brett, Dad and i, all pack up camp. Then we meet them we all walk together for a little then they leave to set up camp, they only have to walk 12 (lucky). thats why Me Brett and my dad are AKA the mens group. ( OH, the reason i left Matt out is because he sleeps in the handcart.)
Hey the great thing is we get a new RV and its BIGGGGEER! it has big bed and bedroom, a bigger shower (which is seperate to the bathroom), a bigger kitchen, a bigger couch and way more space. So thats cool. Any way, i had the 2 most scaryest thing happen to me and all the kids we wer swimming at a lake, and because it had rained so much it flooded so the trees were half way covered in water. Me, Justin, Conner and all swam to one tree. Conner and Justin went up first time and josh stayed below. then me and Josh swam back right after came Justin and Conner, the looked terrerfied. then Justin spoke. ” There’s a Dimond Back Rattle Snake right up in that tree, so i’m going to go tell Bro. Haydon (Dad) ” After he left the snake jumped out of the tree and was swimming toward us. At the we also had mikael so grabed him and ran. Brett was getting every one out but Matt just stood their and said we were pulling a trick on him. luckerly he turned around to see the snake in time so he could get out. We went got my Dad he checked the snake wasn’t there so we grabbed our clothes and back to camp. That night when Matt was taking miky back to camp i toldto run and miky and put him the hancart as he a baby DB Rattle Snake went passed right where he was. Have not seen any snakes since . Hope you are having a great time cant wait to get back!
PS: If i haven’t scared you when are you guys coming out.

I am glad you enjoyed the week that the van broke down lol but I also hope you can enjoy the ones where you still have to walk. We we excited to hear you got to eat a hamburger because you had no food to cook. How FABULOUS was that!! The boys boys all wish they could be there with you keeping you all company. They also want to know that Geelong is on the top of the ladder. North Melbourne is doing ok as well but Geelong has to win lol. Keep practising your Australian so you can still understand what we are saying. Otherwise you might need a translator when you come back home. haha. This is your homework to practise G’day, how you goin’ mate, Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi!!!! We will check how you are doing next time. Love you heaps and send heaps of hugs and kisses.

Sam,
That must have been scary. I think that we are planning on coming sometime around the middle of July. We have to wait until Aubrey’s baptism is over with. She is baptized on the 10th of July. We will let you guys know for sure when it gets closer. Why do you guys wear duct tape on your hands? My baseball team has won 6 times and lost 2. I have two games left and then we go to city. Do you get tired when you walk that long or are you used to it?
See you in the middle of July.
Austin

Middle of July ! Yeah! That’s great !!!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait. Ok, about the duct tape thats called a huge penny sized blister on my hand. ouch huh. Anyway we found a plank of wood and carved it into a bat, that can be used for cricket or Baseball. We made a basketball hoop, that was okay. But it wasn’t as good as playing with a real hoop and basketball. oh and i’m used to it. And thats it, Love, Love you all lots, bye.
P.S. Aubrey thats cool that your being baptised wish i could be their don’t be scared it will be great !

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM from all of us. Wish I could be there to see you ordained as a Deacon and watch you pass the sacrament for the first time. You are about to possess something ‘magical’. You are the second generation in the Haydon family to receive the priesthood – that is quite a milestone! I love reading your stories, keep them coming. Have a wonderful and memorable week, hope we get to hear about it too.
God bless, I love you, Aunty Wendy

hi Sam this is Cory,
last Saturday I played basketball to get into the grand final. I shot two goals, we lost by one goal! It was a really close game. The end scores were 20 to 22. It was neck and neck the whole way through.
Kanga’s are now 9th on the ladder and they have been winning the last couple of games.
Hope the blisters on your hand’s are getting better. Have you seen any other interesting creatures besides the snakes and the turtle?

P.S. GO KANGA’S!!!

Samuel – This is Ann Packard, BYU reporter covering your story now! Just wanted to ask you a couple of questions – and hope you can reply by Tuesday night!
1. What type of preparations for the trek were you involved in before you left? Being as descriptive as possible will be helpful!
2. Considering the preparations that you made – how did they prepare you physically, mentally and spiritually? And if not, what advice would you give someone now?
I will be asking all those that can write the same question, and would be very appreciative of any input all can offer.
For next weeks article, I would like to focus on the “celebrations” that your company have experienced, such as birthdays along the way, Samuel’s ordination, the half-way point, arriving in Martin’s Cove, 4th of July and any other celebrations that you feel are newsworthy!
Look forward to hearing back from you.
