Brett, It’s SOOO WEIRD not having you be at BYC anymore. (Even though your a priest now, and you wouldn’t be there any way) I miss you at mutual. It feels funny not having all you guys there making me look suckish when we do sports or something. (Don’t worry. I don’t mind it! ) 🙂 Hope you have fun!

Day 11. 160 miles.
I’m having a great time out here and i hate blisters a lot. I get a new one every day. I love all you guys and hope you guys have a great summer break. I hope that the Magic do well, they need some fans because every person in camp wants the Celtics to win except me and Conner. They are a bunch of goofballs or betrayers 😉 See all of you a lot later!

Ouch. That’s alot of blisters. Let’s see… how many days have you been gone? By the by, I’m sending you guys mole skin (it’s not REAL mole skin) It totally helps with blisters! (Trust me, it’s saved my life several times) Glad you guys are doing good! 🙂 Hope it stays that way!

Brett and Conner,
You guys are awesome and amazing. Sorry that you don’t get to experience the “speed” that you are so fond of—-16 miles a day is still a pretty good pace. Take care of those blisters–they’ll be your best friends by the end—only because of the lessons you’ll learn by them. We love you. Caleb gets his mission call next Wed. June 2nd. We’ll let you know where he goes. Take care and continue in faith. Love, Crocketts.

Hi Brett! I hope that you boys get to read these comments and respond. I think about you all of the time and wonder how things are moving along for you, and how your feet are holding up! I am so grateful that you are so strong, healthy, and full of energy and positive attitude. “Be strong, and follow through”…our family motto; you and Conner sure are fulfilling that in a big way. Thank you so much for your example and desire to do what is right. I love you sooooo much! You guys are amazing…I don’t know who the song is talking about being amazing, but in my opinion, it should be about you. My eternal love to you…

Hey Brett, Good to hear things are going well, except the blisters. Sounds like the duct tape isn’t working well with you. Keep up the good work. All the people grandpa and I have talked to about the trek say you guys are so brave doing this and what an incredible experience you will have. Love you guys lots and pray for your safety every night.

Dear Brett,
I’m getting some of the updates but not all of them! I hear you’re doing great, except for the blisters! I am so proud of you and jealous of the great experience you are having! You are truly a hero in my book! What a way to prepare yourself for a mission! After you accomplish this you should have all the confidence you need to carry you through a mission as well as the rest of your life! You are a strong and inspirational young man! I’m very proud to say you are one of my priests! We do miss you in the quorum and on Wednesdays, but keep up the great work!
Sincerely,
Jamie

We love you and think and pray for you guys every day. We love you and send lots of hugs and kisses.

I’m so glade grandma and I were invited by your mom to make the trip to get you back there to Nebraska so you could join this great adventure Brett. It was fun to see all the boys faces when we drove up to their camp when we arrived with you. It’s obvious they all look up to you and love your way of inspiring influence. You are the oldest, biggest and strongest young man on this trek and they will learn a lot from you each day, each new experience and climb.
That you know the reason and purpose of this trek and love the opportunity makes us proud of you and the whole group. Your love for the gospel, Our Father in Heavenly and our Savior is a shinning example for these young boys who travel with you each day. They are going to remember you, all of their lives and are going to want to be like you.
Keep up the good work and let us know how things are going as often as you able.
Love, Grandpa Neese

Brett,
You wound up with an “A” in Human Biology! Thought you’d like to know…I am finalizing everything with Momi now. She really is a great HS Counselor.
Hope all is well with my boy! I’m still thinking about you all of the time! Hope you’re having all kinds of ‘guy’ fun, eating and staying healthy and energetic, and carrying your load (personally, and as a family). That reminds me; dad and Brandon built the fence a bit higher, and the dog’s are outside all day now. They seem to really like it. Hope it lasts a while until we can get our more permanent fencing done. Love ya, Mom

I love that you are there because you love the Haydon’s and you wanted to help them. The sacrifice of your summer says it all. It is a strong thing to decide to go on this journey and to finish what you have started. None of you will be quite the same by the time you finish. Most of us who cheer you on from the sidelines will envy that. have fun on the journey!

well all the blisters have popped and my feet are getting used to the ground. Thank all of you for helping me keep going with all the messages you send and the encouragement in the letters. Conner and I have made up a game with no name yet but, yo kick a rock and try to kick that same rock as long as you can. It’s is probably the dumbest but most entertaining thing we do while we are walking. i’m on day 16 really, and sister Haydon says ” don’t be so picky! ” 😉
have a great summer now that it has officially started. love you all

Brett,
Thanks for working so hard to make this a successful day! Relationships are very important to you…keep ’em good! You don’t ever want to act in a way that may make others think differently than that you are a Christlike, loving, caring, strong and helpful young man. I know the true you and your good heart. Others may not. Learning to communicate well is something we are all working on…it never ends. We communicate through our actions, as well as our words. I’m so glad you are mine here in this life and forever. Thank you for being strong, and following through.
Love You Forever, and Always; up to the moon and back and up and back again….and more!

Hi Brett. We decided to keep buddy and sadie outside full time now that it is summer and warm enough for them to be. So, today I am DEEP cleaning in the kitchen. All of their dirt sure did clobber everything and left a lovely mess for me! ; / So…
Just thinkin’ about you. I love you and you picking me up and carrying me up the stairs, and all over the place…lifting me up to touch the ceiling and all of that super “fun” stuff that makes me scream. You’re amazing. Keep it up over there in “Nebraski”!
Love you,

well i miss doing all that stuff and i miss sadie too. hope she is doing well. i have been getting in a lot of trouble lately because of matt and now nobody likes him (including Mikey and sis. Haydon) so we are grounded all week. the dumb thing is he told on himself so everybody hopes he learned his lesson. i love you and i am missing everything about home even cleaning. love you and ill talk to you soon.

I know that you thought that no one else would see your comment, but our conversations are open for everyone to read, here on your blog. I’m sure you would have been a bit more careful in expressing your feelings had you known. But, since it’s all out in the open, and everyone can see some of the realistic challenges that go on out there…I’ll respond “out in the open” too.
Brett, we have been very blessed in our home to not have fighting, bickering, and “not liking” each other going on. What do you think has made it this way all of these years? Certainly not your mother! (well? ; ) J/K…I’d love to take the credit!) Maybe the things that we have practiced here at home…? Trying to live the gospel every day, inviting the spirit on a continual basis, and trying to REALLY be Christlike in all that we do? Though it may not have been very noticeable while you have been growing up, it has been a bit different and unusual; but it (weekly FHE with a message, daily devotional, daily family prayer morning and night, family scripture study, singing songs of praise together, etc.) works; just as the Prophet’s have promised!!! Though it requires a little work and effort, and we are definitely not perfect (individually and as a family)…we are TRYing and Heavenly Father has had mercy and blessed us with peace and love in our home. What do you think you could do a little more of, and maybe a little less of, that would be something similar to what you have experienced all of your life here at home…that could bring that same peaceful, loving spirit that you are used to and long for? Think about it for a while, pray about it, and the answers will come. Then, share it! You will know what to say and do. The Spirit will guide you; and it WILL come. “Lead Brett, Lead”; Just as your father pronounced in your blessing. Read it again. It is in the front of the white binder I put together for you all. You don’t have to wait for someone to ask you for or give you permission to invite the spirit. I love you and am so grateful to be your mother for eternity. “Be strong, and follow through” Mom XOXOXOXO

It was good talking to you yesterday Brett. You are going to grow more this summer with all these experiences your going through then any past summer of your life. It was fun to hear your concernes and I liked your thoughts and answers in how you think things should be handeld. It shows me you are learning and maturing in reasoning. As your Uncle Spencer said yesterday, after this trek your mission will be much easier to live with. When you live with lots of people of different back grounds and personalities, you learn to love and accept their views and respect that.
I’m sure the younger boys are learning or will be learning as this trek continues, to work hard and respect each other more. As I listened to your concernes yesterday, it sounds like patience, understanding and hard work are the keyes to success of this adventure. Things will work out and get better as your trek continues. Think about it, I’m sure there were many concernes and things that the original pioneers had to work out as they made their way just as you are. Keep up the good work, stay stong and smiling. We love you and think about all of you every day. Love, grandpa

day 32
over 400 miles
well almost everything has been solved with problems and such and for some reason it made the trek better too. so i’m enjoying the days a lot more and i am not getting in trouble as much. the summer here is very wet. it has been raining all day and we had to stay in the tent all day but at least we stayed dry. we have seen a couple of rattle snakes and i saw them swim for the first time which was fun and it was swimming towards me which was not fun. we have met a lot of people and only one of the families that i’ve met know’s what basketball is (very strange…to me anyways). the sprinkler incident well it was also another fun but not fun experiences but mostly fun because everybody was crazy. so that is how it is going so far. have fun and see al of you later.

It’s been REALLY wet hear too! Yesterday it was raining cats and dogs, and I went outside with an umbrella. (but I kept throwing it up into the air, so it didn’t keep me dry.) It ROCKED! Throwing umbrella’s up in the air is alot funner than it looks. I know I’m weird. 🙂 Who cares?! What was the sprinkler incident? It sounds fun! I had no idea rattlesnakes could swim! It sounds like you’re having loads of fun out there! Let it stay that way! 😉

Love reading about what you guys are doing each day and how much you have accomplished in your walking. Too bad you have had so much rain, but that way it keeps it cooled down so you can bear the walking. Grandpa and I pray for you and Conner at least 3 times each day that you both are doing well and that the trek is going good. Keep up with the good work and stay away from those snakes!! Yikes, I’m glad you guys got away from them when they were coming at you in the water and that you knew what they were and were able to warn the boys about them and to get out of the water so quickly. We love you and think you are doing a good thing by walking on this trek. It will make you two mature a little bit more and gain more confidence in yourselves helping you as you get older. You can look back on this experience and see how it helped you later in life. We love you lots!! Love Grandma

Hi Brett,
It was so good to talk to you Sunday. You sound real good. DaeNeese went back to school after attending Taylor’s farewell. Brandon is at Youth Conference. Dad is almost done with his block classes and starts his next ones immediately afterward. So, not much of a “break”. He’s doing very well in his classes though, and still loves the work he is doing. Bishop Wilson and his son Brent came over last night to home teach. He wanted us to say hi to you guys for him. His son Brent, the tall thin one, is getting married in just a week or so. So, they’re pretty busy right now! Bishop and Sister Wilson just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary…fun, huh? Bishop gave a lesson from President Monson’s message from the Ensign on not needing to be perfect to do Heavenly Father’s work. We learn to be better as we serve Heavenly Father. I am sure you and I are learning a lot in the service we are doing. I am so grateful that He is always there to help us when we seek it. We also had RS Enrichment meeting last night. The Sister’s of our ward all want to know how things are going for you, and are remembering you all in their prayers. It’s so nice to have such a wonderful ward family.
I love you,
Mom

So back here USA just lost to Ghana ( basically an all black team) but only 2-1. So they are out of the FIFA cup and then John Wall got drafted no.1 to the Washington Wizards. And Corey Magette got traded to the bucks. But I will be keeping you guys in my prayers. Love ya. Ttyl

Brett – This is Ann Packard, BYU reporter covering your story now! Just wanted to ask you a couple of questions – and hope you can reply by Tuesday night!
1. What type of preparations for the trek were you involved in before you left? Being as descriptive as possible will be helpful!
2. Considering the preparations that you made – how did they prepare you physically, mentally and spiritually? And if not, what advice would you give someone now?
I will be asking all those that can write the same question, and would be very appreciative of any input all can offer.
For next weeks article, I would like to focus on the “celebrations” that your company have experienced, such as birthdays along the way, Samuel’s ordination, the half-way point, arriving in Martin’s Cove, 4th of July and any other celebrations that you feel are newsworthy!
Look forward to hearing back from you.
